The short answer
ISO 55001 is the international standard for an asset management system. The 2024 edition requires an asset management policy, a strategic asset management plan (SAMP), resourced objectives, separate treatment of risks and opportunities, life cycle management, asset data and a decision-making framework. Certificates to the withdrawn 2014 edition must transition to the 2024 edition.

ISO 55001 is the international standard for an asset management system: the policies, plans, decisions and controls an organisation uses to get value from its assets across their whole life, from acquisition and operation to maintenance, renewal and disposal. ISO 55001 certification means an independent certification body has audited that system and confirmed it meets the standard. Sovereign Secure provides the consultancy to build it and prepare you for that audit, as part of our ISO certification service.
The current edition is ISO 55001:2024, which replaced the 2014 edition. New systems are built to the 2024 edition; holders of a 2014 certificate must transition before the transition period ends.
What is ISO 55001?
ISO 55001 sets the requirements for a management system for asset management, which the ISO 55000 family describes as the coordinated activity of an organisation to realise value from assets. It can apply to any type of asset, but is most often used for physical ones: networks, plant, fleets, buildings and infrastructure. It is the only standard in the family you can be certified against.
What are the ISO 55000 standards?
The ISO 55000 standards are the ISO family for asset management, developed by the ISO committee ISO/TC 251. ISO 55001 sets the requirements; the others give the vocabulary and the guidance that sits around it.
| Standard | What it does |
|---|---|
| ISO 55000:2024 | Overview, principles and vocabulary of asset management |
| ISO 55001:2024 | Requirements for an asset management system; the standard you are audited against |
| ISO 55002 | Guidance on applying ISO 55001 |
| ISO 55012 | Guidance on people involvement and competence |
| ISO 55013 | Guidance on managing data assets |
The ISO 55000 series, first published in 2014, built on PAS 55, an earlier BSI specification for asset management.
What does ISO 55001 require?
ISO 55001 requires an asset management policy, a strategic asset management plan (SAMP), measurable objectives with resourced plans, and the decision-making, risk, life cycle and data controls that connect day-to-day asset work to organisational goals.
| Clause (2024 edition) | What it requires | What the auditor looks for |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Context, including 4.5 decision-making and value | Context, stakeholders, scope, and a framework for making asset management decisions that weighs value | Decisions on assets made against stated criteria, at every level |
| 5 Leadership | Top management commitment, roles and an asset management policy | Leaders who use asset information to make decisions |
| 6.1 Risks and opportunities | Separate actions to address risks (6.1.2) and opportunities (6.1.3) | Asset risks connected to the organisation’s wider approach to risk |
| 6.2 SAMP, objectives and planning | A SAMP, asset management objectives and resourced plans to achieve them | Objectives that trace from organisational goals down to asset plans |
| 7 Support, including 7.6 data and information and 7.7 knowledge | Resources, competence, awareness, communication, documented information, asset data and organisational knowledge | Reliable asset data, and knowledge that does not sit with one person |
| 8 Operation | Operational planning and control including life cycle management, and control of externally provided processes, products, technologies and services | Life cycle decisions on real assets, and control of contractors and suppliers |
| 9 Performance evaluation | Monitoring of asset and system performance, internal audit and management review | Performance measured and reviewed against objectives |
| 10 Improvement, including 10.3 predictive action | Nonconformity and corrective action, continual improvement and predictive action | Problems anticipated, not only fixed after failure |
What is a strategic asset management plan (SAMP)?
The SAMP (clause 6.2.1) translates organisational objectives into asset management objectives and sets out the role of the asset management system in meeting them. Beneath it sit asset management plans that say what will be done to which assets, when, by whom and with what resources. Auditors test whether you can follow a thread from a board-level objective, through the SAMP, to a maintenance or renewal decision on a specific asset.
What changed in ISO 55001:2024?
The 2024 edition aligns ISO 55001 with the harmonised structure used by other ISO management system standards and adds requirements on decision-making, data and knowledge. ISO/TC 251, the committee responsible for the standard, publishes a clause-by-clause summary of ISO 55001:2024; the main changes are below.
| Change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| New 4.5 asset management decision-making and value | A decision-making approach, scaled to your size, that connects decisions at all levels |
| Risks (6.1.2) and opportunities (6.1.3) separated | Opportunities are planned for, not treated as the absence of risk |
| SAMP simplified (6.2.1) and objectives resourced (6.2.3) | Plans must show the resources needed, balancing cost, risk and performance |
| New 7.6 data and information, and 7.7 knowledge | Asset data and the knowledge people hold become explicit requirements |
| Life cycle management in 8.1, and 8.3 rewritten | Life cycle thinking drives operational decisions, and capability acquired from outside (processes, products, technologies and services) is controlled, not only outsourcing |
| Management review widened (9.3) | Risk and opportunity, decision-making and improvement become review inputs |
| New 10.3 predictive action | Replaces preventive action with adapting to expected changes in risk, opportunity, assets and services |
Transition. The 2014 edition has been withdrawn, and certificates to it stop being valid when the transition period ends. Ask your certification body for the end date and how it will run the transition audit, and run a gap analysis well before your next audit so changes have time to produce evidence.
Who needs ISO 55001?
No UK law requires ISO 55001 certification. Organisations pursue it when their performance depends on long-lived physical assets, or when clients, owners or investors want evidence that those assets are managed well.
| Sector | Typical assets | Why ISO 55001 comes up |
|---|---|---|
| Utilities (water and energy networks) | Pipes, treatment works, substations, cables | Long asset lives, large renewal programmes and close scrutiny of spending |
| Transport and infrastructure | Rail, roads, bridges, ports, airports, fleets | Safety-critical assets and long-term investment planning |
| Local authorities and housing providers | Housing stock, public buildings, highways | Balancing condition, compliance and budget across large portfolios |
| Manufacturing and process industries | Production lines, plant, site utilities | Reliability, maintenance strategy and capital planning |
| Facilities management and maintenance contractors | Clients’ estates and equipment | Asset owners may ask contractors to show aligned asset management |
How do you get ISO 55001 certified?
You get ISO 55001 certified by building an asset management system that works, running it long enough to produce evidence, then passing a two-stage audit by an independent certification body.
- Agree the scope. Which asset portfolios, sites and services will the certificate cover?
- Gap analysis. Measure current practice against the 2024 clauses, including asset data quality and how decisions are made.
- Policy, SAMP and objectives. Link organisational objectives to asset objectives and set decision-making criteria.
- Asset management plans. Life cycle plans for the assets in scope, with resources and responsibilities.
- Data, knowledge and suppliers. Improve the asset register and information flows, and bring contractors into the system.
- Run and review. Monitor performance, then complete an internal audit and a management review.
- Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits. The certification body reviews readiness, tests the system and decides on certification. The certificate lasts three years, with annual surveillance audits and recertification before expiry.
What does our ISO 55001 consultancy include?
Take the full route or only the steps you need.
| Service | What you get |
|---|---|
| Gap analysis | A clause-by-clause view against ISO 55001:2024, with a prioritised plan |
| Transition review | For 2014 certificate holders: the changes that affect you and what to update first |
| SAMP and decision-making | A SAMP linking organisational objectives to asset plans, and decision criteria that balance cost, risk and performance |
| Data and knowledge | A review of asset data, information requirements and how knowledge is retained |
| Documentation and training | Proportionate procedures, and briefings for leaders, asset owners and maintainers |
| Internal audit and management review | An impartial internal audit and a review pack covering the 2024 inputs |
| Audit support | Preparation for Stage 1 and Stage 2, and help closing any findings |
How much does ISO 55001 certification cost?
There is no single price. ISO 55001 certification cost has two parts, consultancy to build the asset management system and the certification body’s audit fees over a three-year cycle, and both scale with your asset base and the maturity of your asset data.
| Cost driver | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| People and sites in scope | Sets the certification body’s audit time and the number of people to involve and train |
| Number and complexity of asset portfolios | Each portfolio needs its own asset management plans, life cycle decisions and evidence |
| Asset register and condition data | Incomplete or unreliable data means more work before plans and decisions can rest on it |
| Outsourced operation and maintenance | Contractors must be brought into the system and controlled under clause 8.3 |
| Existing management systems | ISO 9001, 14001 or 27001 already in place can share document control, internal audit and management review |
We give a fixed consultancy quote once we know your scope; budget separately for the certification body’s audits across the three-year cycle.
How does ISO 55001 fit with other standards?
ISO 55001 shares the clause 4 to 10 structure with other ISO management system standards, so it can sit inside one integrated system with shared document control, internal audits and management reviews.
- Quality. ISO 9001 certification covers the processes that deliver your services; ISO 55001 covers the assets they depend on.
- Environment. ISO 14001 manages the environmental impacts of operating and disposing of assets.
- Energy. For energy-intensive assets such as pumps, plant and fleets, ISO 50001 energy management measures and improves their energy performance.
- Information security. The 2024 edition gives asset data its own clause (7.6); ISO 27001 protects that data and the systems that hold it.
- Continuity. ISO 22301 plans for disruption to critical assets and the services they support.
