Overview
What is Cyber Essentials certification?
The short answer
Cyber Essentials certification is the UK government-backed scheme, set by the NCSC and run by IASME, that shows your organisation has five technical controls in place: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection. You answer a self-assessment, a licensed certification body assesses it, and the certificate lasts 12 months. Prices start at £320 + VAT.
Cyber Essentials is a UK government-backed certification scheme overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and delivered by IASME through licensed certification bodies. You answer an online self-assessment questionnaire about your IT, a qualified assessor at a certification body reviews it, and if you meet the requirements you are certified for 12 months and listed on the public certificate search.
Why use an IASME-licensed certification body? Only licensed certification bodies can assess and issue Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certificates. Sovereign Secure is one of them, so there is no reseller between you and the assessor: your questions go straight to the certification body that assesses your submission. Anyone can confirm a certificate we issue on the IASME certificate search; see certified clients and certificate verification. Before you pick a Cyber Essentials company, check that it is a licensed certification body rather than a reseller: our guide to choosing a Cyber Essentials certification body lists what to ask.
Cyber Essentials accreditation or certification? Buyers use both words for the same thing. Your organisation is certified; certification bodies are the ones licensed by IASME to assess you. If a tender asks for "Cyber Essentials accreditation", a current Cyber Essentials certificate is what it means.
The 2026 question set (Danzell). Assessment accounts opened from 27 April 2026 use IASME’s Danzell question set, based on version 3.3 of the NCSC Requirements for IT Infrastructure. Cloud services cannot be left out of scope, and missing multi-factor authentication (MFA) on a cloud service that offers it is now an automatic fail. Our Cyber Essentials requirements and checklist covers every rule, and our Cyber Essentials questionnaire page explains each section of the questions.
What does it cost? Our Bronze packages match IASME’s published fee bands: £320 (0-9 employees), £440 (10-49), £500 (50-249) and £600 (250+), all + VAT. Silver and Gold add faster assessment and more resubmissions, up to £750 + VAT. See the full Cyber Essentials cost table, or Cyber Essentials Plus cost for the audited level.
What you receive. A certificate valid for 12 months, an entry on the public certificate search that customers and procurement teams can check (see how to check a Cyber Essentials certificate), use of the Cyber Essentials logo under the scheme’s rules and, if you are eligible and opt in, IASME’s included Cyber Essentials insurance: cyber liability cover with a £25,000 limit at no extra cost.
Cyber Essentials and PCI DSS for merchants. If you take card payments, Cyber Essentials does not replace PCI DSS, but the controls overlap: firewalls, secure configuration, patching, access control and malware protection appear in both. We are a PCI SSC-approved QSA company as well as a certification body, so we can scope both and reuse the same evidence. See our PCI DSS compliance services.
Need help first? Our Cyber Essentials services run from a free check to hands-on support. Try the free Cyber Essentials readiness check, or ask about Cyber Essentials consultancy and support. Certified with another body? Cyber Essentials renewal with us is priced the same as a first certificate. Weighing up a bigger standard? Compare Cyber Essentials vs ISO 27001.

How the Cyber Essentials scheme works: NCSC, IASME and certification bodies
The UK Cyber Essentials scheme has three layers. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) developed the scheme and sets its technical requirements, which is why buyers often call it NCSC Cyber Essentials (or, after the body that delivers it, IASME Cyber Essentials). IASME, the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials Delivery Partner, runs the scheme and licenses certification bodies, and a certification body’s assessors assess your organisation and issue the certificate.
- 1. Sets the requirementsNCSCDeveloped the scheme and publishes the technical requirements (Requirements for IT Infrastructure, v3.3 since April 2026).
- 2. Delivers the schemeIASMEThe NCSC’s Cyber Essentials Delivery Partner: publishes the question set, licenses certification bodies and runs the certificate search.
- 3. Assesses and certifiesCertification bodyLicensed by IASME. Its assessors mark your answers, run Cyber Essentials Plus audits and issue certificates. Sovereign Secure is one.
- 4. Gets certifiedYour organisationAgrees its scope, answers the questions with board-level sign-off and is certified for 12 months once it meets the requirements.
Two routes to the same certificate. The NCSC Cyber Essentials overview describes a self-led route, where you register and pay through IASME, and a supported route, where you hire a certification body licensed by IASME to help you understand the questions. Either way, a board member or equivalent signs off your answers, an assessor marks them, and the certificate appears on the same certificate search. Sovereign Secure is a certification body, so our packages follow the supported route, with a pre-assessment check and a support call included.
Where Cyber Essentials Plus fits. Plus is part of the same scheme and builds on basic Cyber Essentials (often called Cyber Essentials basic). The NCSC publishes the Cyber Essentials Plus test specification, and an assessor from a licensed certification body runs the tests on a sample of your devices within three months of your basic certificate; see Cyber Essentials Plus. For more on the organisation that licenses certification bodies and runs the portal, read our guide to IASME.

What's included
The five technical controls, and your scope
Cyber Essentials checks that five sets of controls are in place across every in-scope device, network and cloud service.
- 01
Firewalls
Boundary firewalls and software firewalls configured to block unauthorised access, with default passwords changed and unnecessary services closed.
- 02
Secure configuration
Devices and software hardened: unused accounts and software removed, auto-run disabled, and device locking in place.
- 03
Security update management
Operating systems, applications and router and firewall firmware supported by the vendor, with high and critical updates installed within 14 days of release. The same rules cover phones and tablets that access work data.
- 04
User access control
Accounts issued only to those who need them, separate admin accounts used only for admin tasks, and MFA for every user and administrator on cloud services. See the Cyber Essentials MFA requirements and password rules.
- 05
Malware protection
Anti-malware or application allow-listing in place on every device that can run it. Together the five controls guard against the most common ways ransomware gets in, but they do not cover backups; see how to prevent ransomware.
- 06
Scope definition
We help you decide what is in scope: offices, home workers, BYOD and servers. Cloud services can never be excluded. Getting scope right is the biggest single factor in passing first time; start with our Cyber Essentials scope questionnaire.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Can't find your answer? Call us on +44 161 523 5276 or send us a message.
What is Cyber Essentials certification?
It is a UK government-backed certificate showing that your organisation has five technical controls in place: firewalls, secure configuration, security update management, user access control and malware protection. You complete a self-assessment questionnaire and a licensed certification body, such as Sovereign Secure, assesses it.
Is Cyber Essentials certification worth it?
For most organisations, yes: from £320 + VAT it opens contracts that require it and guards against the most common attacks. Our guide to the benefits of Cyber Essentials weighs it up.
How does Cyber Essentials compare with ISO 27001?
Cyber Essentials checks five technical controls and is renewed every 12 months, while ISO 27001 certifies a whole information security management system, and many organisations hold both; see Cyber Essentials vs ISO 27001. For a free technical roadmap beyond the five controls, see our guide to the CIS Controls.
How is Cyber Essentials priced?
By company size and support level. Our packages cost £320 to £750 + VAT, and the entry price for 0-9 employees matches IASME’s published fee. See the full Cyber Essentials price list.
How long does it take to get Cyber Essentials?
Most organisations take a few days to a few weeks to prepare. Once you submit, we assess within 24 hours on Gold, 48 hours on Silver and 3-5 working days on Bronze.
Should we get Cyber Essentials or Cyber Essentials Plus?
Start with Cyber Essentials, a verified self-assessment, because Plus requires it. Add Plus when a customer or contract asks for it: it adds a hands-on technical audit by an assessor, including vulnerability scans and tests on a sample of your devices. See Cyber Essentials Plus certification and audit and our comparison of Cyber Essentials vs Cyber Essentials Plus.
Is Cyber Essentials mandatory?
It is not a legal requirement, but UK central government contracts that involve handling personal information or supplying certain ICT systems and services require it under Procurement Policy Note 014, and many private-sector buyers ask their suppliers for it. Our guide Is Cyber Essentials mandatory? explains the contract rules.
Who needs Cyber Essentials?
Any organisation whose customers, contracts or tenders ask for it, including many suppliers to UK central government, MOD suppliers whose contracts carry DEFCON 658 and many NHS suppliers, for whom it also supports the NHS DSPT; see who must have Cyber Essentials and our guides for schools, law firms, charities and financial services. For a quick yes or no, see do I need Cyber Essentials in our FAQs.
How long is the certificate valid?
Twelve months, with no grace period. To stay certified you pass a new assessment each year. See Cyber Essentials renewal.
Is cyber insurance included with Cyber Essentials certification?
Yes, for eligible organisations: IASME includes cyber liability cover with a £25,000 limit at no extra cost if you certify your whole organisation, are domiciled in the UK or Crown Dependencies, have turnover under £20m and opt in. See Cyber Essentials insurance.
What happens if we fail?
You are given the chance to fix issues and resubmit within your package limits: one resubmission on Bronze, three on Silver and unlimited on Gold within the time-to-pass period.
Can I see the questions before I start?
Yes. Our Cyber Essentials questionnaire page explains every section, with a free spreadsheet for drafting answers offline. The portal always shows the current question set.
How do I check whether a supplier has Cyber Essentials?
Search the organisation on the IASME certificate search and check the level and expiry date. Our guide to checking a Cyber Essentials certificate explains each field. Our guide to supply chain security explains how Cyber Essentials fits into wider supplier checks.
Do you work with IT providers and MSPs?
Yes. Many clients’ IT is run by a managed service provider, and we can work with them on your scope and fixes. IT firms certifying several clients can see our Cyber Essentials partner programme for MSPs.
Do I need a local Cyber Essentials provider?
No. Cyber Essentials is assessed online and any IASME-licensed certification body can certify organisations anywhere in the UK, including Cyber Essentials London clients, with on-site Cyber Essentials Plus audits on request.
