Overview

What is Cyber Essentials Plus?

The short answer

Cyber Essentials Plus is the audited level of Cyber Essentials. After you pass the self-assessment, an assessor from an IASME-licensed certification body tests a sample of your devices, internet-facing systems and cloud accounts against the NCSC test specification, within three months of your basic certificate. Published UK prices we reviewed in September 2026 run from £999 to £3,999 + VAT.

Cyber Essentials Plus (CE+) is the audited level of the UK government-backed Cyber Essentials scheme. You pass the Cyber Essentials self-assessment first, then an assessor from an IASME-licensed certification body tests a sample of your devices, your internet-facing systems and your cloud accounts to prove the five controls work. The certificate lasts 12 months.

Often shortened to CE+ and sometimes written "Cyber Essential Plus", it uses the same five controls as Cyber Essentials certification, but instead of relying on your answers alone, an assessor tests them. The tests follow the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials Plus Test Specification. Buyers also call it Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation or a Cyber Essentials Plus assessment (CE+ assessment).

The three-month rule. Under the Cyber Essentials Plus scheme rules, you must hold Cyber Essentials (basic) first, and complete the Plus audit within three months of that certificate being issued. The audit tests the scope you certified at the basic level. Our Plus price includes the basic assessment, so you have one supplier and one timeline.

Remote or on-site. Audits can usually be run remotely using screen sharing and a scanning tool we provide, which keeps disruption and cost down for multi-site and home-working teams. On-site audits are available when a remote audit is not practical, including on-site Cyber Essentials Plus audits in London.

Timeline. Allow a few weeks. The asset declaration form is due at least two weeks before the audit and the basic assessment one week before. Most small organisations finish the audit itself in a day, and anything that fails must be fixed and retested within 30 days. Not sure you are ready? Check your Cyber Essentials Plus readiness with our free tool before you book.

Who asks for Plus? Buyers who want independent proof rather than a self-assessment, including many public sector, defence and NHS supply chains and enterprise supplier-assurance programmes. Under DEFCON 658 for MOD suppliers, contracts with a Cyber Risk Profile of Level 2 or 3 require Plus, and in the NHS DSPT a current Plus certificate moves an organisation outside Category 1 from Standards Met to Standards Exceeded. Check the contract wording: some ask for Cyber Essentials, others specifically for Plus, and our guide to government contract rules explains which.

Our IASME-licensed assessors. Your audit is carried out by an IASME-qualified Cyber Essentials Plus assessor from our team. Once you pass, you are listed on the public certificate search and can display the Cyber Essentials Plus badge while the certificate is valid. Sovereign Secure is also a PCI SSC-approved QSA company that provides penetration testing, so we can take the work further if a customer asks for more than CE+, and we are licensed by IASME for IASME Cyber Assurance, often the next step after Cyber Essentials Plus.

What does it cost? Published UK prices we reviewed in September 2026 range from £999 to £3,999 + VAT, set mainly by organisation size and the number of devices to sample. See Cyber Essentials Plus cost for the price bands and what drives them. We give you a fixed quote with the basic assessment included, and our Cyber Essentials Plus requirements page covers sample sizes and how to prepare.

What is a Cyber Essentials audit?

A Cyber Essentials audit is the hands-on technical assessment that leads to Cyber Essentials Plus. An assessor from an IASME-licensed certification body checks that the five controls actually work on a sample of your devices, your internet-facing systems and your cloud accounts, following the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials Plus test specification.

Basic Cyber Essentials is independently verified but has no technical audit: an assessor marks your self-assessment answers, which a board member or equivalent signs off. So when a customer or tender asks for an audited Cyber Essentials certificate, it means Cyber Essentials Plus. Most small organisations finish the audit in a day, remotely or on site, and anything that fails must be fixed and retested within 30 days. Our audit-day checklist shows what to have ready.

What's included

The CE+ audit: what we test

Five test types from the NCSC Cyber Essentials Plus Test Specification, run against a sample of your devices and accounts. The NCSC test specification is the definitive source.

  • 01

    Remote vulnerability assessment

An external scan of the internet-facing IP addresses and services you declare, looking for high or critical vulnerabilities (CVSS 7.0 or above), plus a check of how public login pages resist password guessing. Our guide to vulnerability assessment explains how scan findings are validated and rated.

  • 02

    Authenticated patch scans

Credentialed vulnerability scans of sample laptops, desktops and servers to confirm high and critical updates were installed within 14 days. Sample phones and tablets are checked for supported, up-to-date software.

  • 03

    Malware protection tests

Harmless test files sent by email and downloaded in the browser to confirm they are blocked, or that the user is warned before anything runs.

  • 04

    Multi-factor authentication

Users of the sampled devices sign in to your cloud services, as a user and as an administrator, from an untrusted device or an incognito browser. The test passes only if an MFA prompt appears before access is granted.

  • 05

    Account separation

A user signed in with a standard account tries to run an administrative task on each sampled device. The test passes only if a separate administrator login is required and the task does not run under the user’s own account.

  • 06

    Device sampling

We test a sample of each operating system version you use, from 1 to 5 devices each, so large estates are not tested machine by machine. See the CE+ sample size table.

How is Cyber Essentials Plus different from basic Cyber Essentials?

Both levels check the same five controls. Plus adds an independent technical audit, so it costs more and takes longer, and it can only follow a current basic certificate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Call us on +44 161 523 5276 or send us a message.

What is Cyber Essentials Plus?

Cyber Essentials Plus is the audited level of the Cyber Essentials scheme. As well as passing the self-assessment, a sample of your devices, internet-facing systems and cloud accounts is tested by an assessor from a licensed certification body to prove the five controls work in practice.

What is a Cyber Essentials audit?

It is the technical assessment behind Cyber Essentials Plus: an assessor tests a sample of your devices, internet-facing systems and cloud accounts against the NCSC test specification. Basic Cyber Essentials has no technical audit; an assessor marks your self-assessment answers instead.

What does Cyber Essentials Plus include?

The basic Cyber Essentials self-assessment, five technical tests on a sample of your devices and accounts (an external vulnerability scan, authenticated patch scans, malware tests, an MFA check and an account-separation check) and, once you pass, both certificates. Our CE+ quotes always include the basic assessment.

Can you get Cyber Essentials Plus without Cyber Essentials?

No. You need a Cyber Essentials certificate first, and the Plus audit must be completed within three months of it being issued. We include the basic assessment in every CE+ quote, so both stages sit in one order.

How is Cyber Essentials Plus priced?

It depends on the number of devices, operating systems, sites and cloud services in scope. Published UK prices we reviewed in September 2026 range from £999 to £3,999 + VAT; see Cyber Essentials Plus cost. We give you a fixed quote after a short scoping questionnaire, with the basic assessment included.

How many devices do you test?

A sample based on each operating system version in use: 1 device if you have one, 2 for 2-5, 3 for 6-19, 4 for 20-60 and 5 for 61 or more. Servers and mobile devices are sampled the same way. See our Cyber Essentials Plus requirements page.

Can the audit be done remotely?

Yes. Audits can usually be run remotely, using screen sharing (Teams, Quick Assist or similar) and a scanning tool we provide. We need an administrator available throughout who can access all sample devices.

What happens if we fail a test?

You have 30 days to fix the issues across your whole scope, not just the sampled devices, and be retested. Since April 2026, if devices fail the security update checks, the retest rechecks the original sample and also tests a new random sample, and a second failure means your basic certificate is revoked. Remote retests up to one hour are free; other retests start at £400 + VAT. If the retest is not completed in time, a new assessment is needed.

How long does Cyber Essentials Plus take?

Allow a few weeks from quote to certificate: the asset declaration is due two weeks before the audit and the basic assessment one week before. Most small organisations complete the audit itself in a day.

Do you have to repeat the Cyber Essentials Plus audit each year?

Yes. Both certificates last twelve months, so to stay certified you renew the basic certificate and repeat the Plus audit within three months of it each year; see Cyber Essentials renewal.

Is Cyber Essentials Plus the same as a penetration test?

No. CE+ runs fixed vulnerability tests against five baseline controls, while a penetration test is scoped to your systems and looks for any way in. See how CE+ vulnerability testing compares with a penetration test.

Is Cyber Essentials Plus enough on its own?

For a contract that asks for CE+, yes, but it proves a baseline, not everything: an audit of five controls on a sample of devices, not a scoped penetration test of your applications and networks, and standards such as PCI DSS ask for more again. A CE+ certificate will not satisfy a buyer who wants a pen test report, so if customers also ask for one, see our penetration testing services or affordable penetration testing for small businesses.

Is Cyber Essentials Plus worth it?

If a contract or customer asks for it, yes, and it gives independent proof that your controls work rather than a declaration. See the benefits of Cyber Essentials Plus.

Is ISO 27001 better than Cyber Essentials Plus?

Neither is better: ISO 27001 certifies a whole information security management system, Cyber Essentials Plus tests five technical controls, and ISO 27001 does not replace CE+ where a UK contract names it; see Cyber Essentials Plus vs ISO 27001.
